Background

Spat was built in 1969 by Curtis Applegarth as a recreational vessel. She was donated to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum by Wilbur Banderson, Thomas C. Banderson and Bessie E. Banderson in memory of Capt. James (Butch) O. Banderson. In poor condition at the time, the museum installed her as a land exhibit. After her condition deteriorated further, they took the lines from her and rebuilt Spat as a volunteer project in the museum's boat shop.

Thanks to Pete Lesher, Chief Curator of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, for providing the background information.
